Copa, FMF week 1, Chelito, A few words for Sam and Fran

Morning, goons, goonettes, and all life-forms of goonerism. The blog’s taken a few days off but were up and running with loads of info coming your way.

Fist off, we were again denied (in some ways) Larissa Riquelme running around naked on the pitch as Uruguay beat Paraguay 2-0. In what was a pretty one-sided game. It was a well deserved victory for Uruguay as they were the only side in the whole tournament to play to their potential. I’ve never liked Forlan and just recently started despising Suarez, but both are great footballers and there is no denying they were a big part of the Uruguayan’s success but I also liked how Lugano played for them. Absolute beast in the heart of their defense and provided a goal-scoring threat off set pieces. Pretty much everything you could ask from a CB. Well, what are you waiting for Arsene?!

FMF 1a made it debut this weekend as well with my Pumas beating San Luis 2-0 when it could have easily ended 56-0 if Martin Bravo was in mid-season form. Very few notable results except maybe the fact that Monterey pummeled Chiapas 4-1 w/o a huge chunk of their first choice players. Not sure if the same chemistry will be there when those players including Humberto Suazo and Chelito Delgado, whose partern-ship will be huge for them this season.

If you recall, Chelito is returning from a 3 year stint with League 1’s Lyon. He played a key role in the team but new boss Remi Garde saw him as surplus to requirements so he was sold to Monterrey . I’ve often asked myself why players like Chelito that have succeeded or at least played pretty well at a European club take the easy route back to Mexico or a lower league instead of trying to find another European club to play for?

While part of me thinks that even at 29, Chelito can still hang in a European team, he may also be realizing he has 4 good years to offer, tops, and would rather compete for a title in Mexico than fade off into mediocrity in Europe. He is adored in Mexico, the ease of not having to learn a new language, and the level of football and how well he is suited for it are all good reasons to say “Hey, I think I’ll go play for Monterrey instead of Palermo.”

I’m not saying he had much of a choice but like I said, he is a fantastic player and will offer Monterrey much more creativity in attack than they’ve had since they won the title a year or so back.

I'm baaaaack!

All the ‘big’ teams got off to wins save for La Maquina who couldn’t get past a resiliant Tigres. New side Xolos de Tijuana lost their first game in top flight football but managed to score their fist goal.

FMF Week 1 results:

Tecos 1 Toluca 2 Poor Hercules Gomez 😦 That’s really all I can say about that one.

Pachuca 1 Santos 4 WOW. Santos seems to have gotten better despite having sold one of their best players in ex-Brum striker Jesus Benitez

Tigres 1 Cruz Azul 1 Not the start Ojitos Meza was hoping for after yet, another busy summer.

Atlas 0 Puebla 1 Meh

Chivas 2 Atlante 0 Meh x2. I actually think Chivas will have a better season since they haven’t made many changes to their line-up this season and hopefully, maybe, just maybe Arellano will have that break-out season Chivas have been waiting for.

UNAM 2 San Luis 0 What can I say? The team looked like they’ve not stopped playing together all summer and hopefully will roll on. Sorry, Jehu but daddy had to come back and beat that ass.

Monterrey 4 Chiapas 1 I’m assuming when Chupete, Chelito, and all their other first team-ers return they will be winning these games 7-0

Amierdica 2 Queretaro 1 Meh, meh, and meh. I hate America. Sorry if there are Americanistas who are reading this but your team will not get much love on this blog. Call me jealous, gatita parda, whatever you like. Just remember that cats eat birds so make of that what you will.

I’ll be doing my best to keep you informed with whats going on in Mex throughout the season.

Onto what you really came here for.

Arsenal beat FC Køln 2-1 in Germany. It is worth noting that ze German side had a goat on their team and he had a look on his face like he was fixing to chip Almunia if the Spaniard had stepped in between the sticks. Luckily, neither happened.

Both of our new signings scored but unfortunately one of those goals fell into our net. My heart fell to my stomach for Jenks when he lobbed Wojciech but it was just typical of our luck now wasn’t it? Up 2 nil and that wasn’t quite good enough for us, was it? Luckily, the German outfit were not very good finishers and couldn’t capitalize on the chances they created.

New boy Gervinho made a dream start to his Arsenal career by scoring with what was pretty much his first touch. Then a few minutes later he doubled it after a brilliant low cross from Theo. Before we run out into the streets, screaming his name, ah fuck it. Lets all go run out into the streets and scream his name!

GERVINHO WOAH WHOAH

GERVINHO WOAH WOAH

HIS FOREHEAD IS IMMENSE

HE’LL TEAR UP YOUR DEFENSE

GERVINHO WOAH WOAH

GERVINHO WOAH WOAH

Ahem, where were we? Ah yes, Gervinho. He showed in the 30 some odd minutes he played, that he has great movement, speed, and finishing ability. Very happy for him and hopefully his effort throughout the season will match his talent.

The Cesc/Nasri situation has seen very little to no movement as of late and we are all hoping that both’s future will be sooner rather than later. In the Frenchman’s case I am pretty annoyed that a player who has had a great 1/2 of the season is holding us ransom for what is now reported to be over 115k a week. It’s clear he is not committed to the club who brought him to England and gave him a shot at succeeding where he would have been a bench-rider elsewhere. It’s pretty frustrating that players like Nasri see us a springboard to other clubs and after we give them their chance they fuck off to City.

I know the club is bigger than any 1 player but after seeing his ability develop and standing by him when his form dipped, him showing that his loyalty is but to himself and money, it stings a bit. Now that I’m over that part of it, I think it would be a good chance to show other players that we will not stand for their mercenary tactics. Bench his ass. Let him sit the year out and see what that does for his career.

As for our ”captain” ,who seems to be content with allowing others speak for him, my feelings are not much different. We made you a Premier League player at 16, a first team player at 18, and club captain at 21. We have built this side around your talents and abilities. We have shown we believe in you and support you. What do you have to say? Just say it. Say it and leave or say it and stay. Your silence in this case, is not golden. It is perpetuating the doubts that are being cast and as captain of this club, you owe us honesty and transparency, at the very least. As @YankeeGunner said a while back: You can go to Barca and become a great player or you can stay at Arsenal and become a legend. Ball’s in your court, Cesc.

Well, that should do you for a few days. Come back soon when you need another fix!
